When Jules Jaluzot and Jean-Alfred Duclos opened the first business in 1865 in a stately building at the corner of rue du Havre and Boulevard Haussmann, the seeds of success were planted.
Situated on the right side of the river in the developing neighborhood of La Chaussée d’Antin, the region was still developing, albeit a little off-center.
Understanding the strategic benefits of their site, the astute businesspeople set up their establishment to draw customers from the Grands Boulevards’ busy covered shopping lanes and the nearby Gare Saint-Lazare.
Their prediction came true, as Parisians were already swarming to well-known shopping venues like Le Bon Marché, La Samaritaine, and Le Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville to find the newest styles.
By naming their business “Le Printemps” (Spring), a representation of renewal and creativity, Jaluzot and Duclos laid the groundwork for a retail establishment that would continuously change and reinvent itself over the ensuing years.
A shopping center that is always reinventing itself is Le Printemps Haussmann.
In 1921, Le Printemps Haussmann suffered a serious blow when a destructive fire destroyed the majority of its property. But under Georges Wybo’s direction, the store was painstakingly rebuilt, enlarged to road de Charras, and furnished with cutting-edge elements like Brummell L’Homme Elégant, a brand-new division featuring elegant menswear.
Adopting the philosophy of constant innovation, Le Printemps unveiled eye-catching temporary displays, such as its well-known Christmas displays, which continue to be a holiday highlight. The store’s importance was further enhanced in 1923 with the completion of the Havre-Caumartin stop on Metro line #2, which allowed for an increase in foot traffic.
Le Printemps was purchased by Francois Pinault in 1991, who then incorporated it into his conglomerate and expanded its offerings to include sections for men’s clothing, fashion, leisure, and beauty. When a Qatari-controlled investment fund took over ownership in 2013, it marked a significant turning point in its illustrious history.
